Bar-Kays
Jimmy King, Guitar; Ronny Caldwell, Organ; Carl Cunningham, Drums; Phalon Jones, Sax; Ben Cauley, Trumpet; James Alexander, Bass.

There were many many black high school bands at the time but the Bar-Kays were not like the other guys. So good were they that within a year of their formation they became the house band at Stax records. Soon to have the 1967 summer anthem 'Soul Finger'. They then went on to become Otis Redding's touring band but sadley all but Ben Cauley and James Alexander died along with Redding in the plane crash later that year. The two remaining members then reformed the group and released the comeback 'Gotta groove' in 1969. Then during the 70's they went funky freak style and went on a ten year run producing ten albums and a fairly succsesful concert career which they still continue. The Bar-kays are an often forgotten gem of the Funk.
