Detroit native Donald Byrd rose quickly in the 1950's New York jazz scene. By the early 60's Byrd was a top selling artist for Blue Note records but had burned out by 1968. He then went on to become a teacher at Howard University's newly formed Jazz institute. Within three years his students had dwindled down to six. These were to become The Blackbyrds. In 1974 They signed with the Fantasy label to release there self titled debut. The blackbyrds had a great mix of funk and jazz that went on to influence acts like Incognito and Sade.
