Ron Banks, Wee Gee Howard, Elbert Wikins, Larry Demps, Willie Ford, Lenny Mayes, LJ Reynolds, Winzell Kelly Detroit during the 1960s had more talent than its record companies could handle. Since not all of the city's most gifted vocal groups could be accomodated by Motown, the Dramatics initially recorded for a series of small labels before ending up on Wingate Records. When Motown purchased the Wingate label, Motown staff producer Don Davis went south to Stax/Volt and took the group, by this time renamed the Dramatics, with him. They scored major R&B hits right away with "Whatcha See Is Whatcha Get" which made the Top 20 on both the R&B and pop charts, and the #1 soul ballad "In the Rain". The group then suffered through a spate of growing pains before settling into its permanent lineup, fronted by original member Ron Banks and later recruit L. | ||
